Karla Sofia Gascón is following up her historic Golden Globes nomination with another groundbreaking role. The 52-year-old actress, who made history as the first openly trans nominee in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy category for her role in Emilia Perez, has been cast in the upcoming Spanish film Las Malas.
Directed by Armando Bo and based on Camila Sosa Villada’s novel Bad Girls, Las Malas follows the story of Aunt Encarna, portrayed by Karla. The character is described as a “tough but motherly leader of a group of trans sex workers,” whose life takes a dramatic turn when she discovers an abandoned baby and decides to adopt him, unknowingly putting those around her in danger.
Karla’s recognition at the Golden Globes for Emilia Perez has further highlighted her talent and opened doors for more representation in cinema. Several of her Emilia Perez co-stars were also nominated at the prestigious awards, underscoring the film’s impact and critical acclaim.
With Las Malas, Karla continues to break boundaries while portraying complex, meaningful characters that bring underrepresented stories to the forefront of cinema.
