Cynthia Erivo shared fascinating details about her transformation into Elphaba for Wicked. It took about two hours and 45 minutes to apply the green makeup for her face, neck, and hands, and around four hours when the full-body makeup was required. Erivo confirmed that the makeup was done practically, as opposed to using CGI, a decision she championed for authenticity.
Responding to the criticism about being a “woke hire” for the role, Erivo made it clear that she had to audition like everyone else. She expressed pride in her qualifications and the hard work she put into securing the role, which made the achievement even more meaningful.
Erivo also discussed her strong bond with co-star Ariana Grande, revealing that their friendship extends beyond the set. The two spend hours on FaceTime, engaging in deep, meaningful conversations.
Regarding her connection to Elphaba, Erivo explained that she didn’t want to erase her own identity under the green makeup. As a Black woman, she felt a deep connection to Elphaba’s experience of being “othered,” and this influence is reflected in her portrayal, from Elphaba’s braids to her long nails. Erivo believes Elphaba’s story resonates with anyone who feels different, regardless of race, sexual orientation, or other forms of uniqueness.
