Kraven the Hunter has struggled at the box office, debuting at No. 3 with only $11 million from 3,211 theaters. This marks the lowest opening for Sony’s Marvel character universe, falling behind Madame Web, which earned $15.3 million. The film has received poor critical reception, holding a 15% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C” grade from CinemaScore.
With an estimated production cost of $110 million, the film explores the origin of Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven), focusing on his tumultuous relationship with his crime lord father (played by Russell Crowe) and his ambition to become the world’s greatest hunter. The movie is Sony’s third Spider-Man-related release this year, following Venom: The Last Dance.
Despite these struggles, a report has emerged claiming that Sony will scale back its plans for further expansion of its Spider-Man universe, hinting at the studio’s reevaluation of its strategy in the wake of Kraven‘s underperformance.
