Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man connected to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was escorted to court in a perp walk on Monday, December 9, after his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He appeared stone-faced in handcuffs, wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt and jeans as he was escorted into the Blair County Court House for a preliminary arraignment. Before his court appearance, Mangione posed for a mugshot, staring intensely into the camera while wearing multiple layers of dark clothing, including a black neckwarmer.
Mangione is considered a person of interest in Thompson’s murder, which occurred outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan. Thompson was shot and killed, and the suspect fled the scene on a bike before leaving New York via a Port Authority bus. Authorities shared images of the suspect, leading a McDonald’s employee in Altoona to recognize Mangione, prompting the police to make the arrest.
In the investigation, police discovered that Mangione had a fake ID, a firearm with a suppressor, and clothing matching those of the suspect. Additionally, authorities found a 2-page handwritten document that was critical of the healthcare industry. When Mangione was arrested, he was sitting in a McDonald’s, with a blue surgical mask and a silver laptop. He showed officers a fake New Jersey ID when asked for identification, and when questioned about being in New York, he became visibly nervous.
Further investigation of his backpack revealed a 3D-printed black pistol, a 3D-printed silencer, a Glock magazine with 9mm rounds, and a loose hollow-point round. Mangione was charged with forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records or identification, instruments of crime, and false identification to law enforcement. However, he has not yet been charged with the murder of Brian Thompson.
