Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has asserted that Liverpool have a squad capable of challenging Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title in the 2024-25 campaign.
The Reds have opened the ongoing season on an excellent note despite slumping to a shock 1-0 home league loss against Nottingham Forest earlier this month. The Merseyside club have won four of their five matches this season and are in second spot with 12 points.
During a recent interaction on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes shared his honest thoughts on Liverpool’s chances of lifting their 20th top-flight title next May. He said (h/t Mirror):
“I think Liverpool might have something to say about the title race this year. When I look at their forward players, I think they have five or six good players. Seeing Liverpool first-hand, what a squad of players, I see very little weaknesses. The only one we thought about was possibly [a weakness] if Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate got injured in the centre-half position.”
Scholes, who made 713 appearances for Manchester United, added:
“I see their squad, the five or six midfield players who can all run and are great athletes with quality. You then look at the forwards, and they can all play. The only worry was the Forest game, that threw me.”
The Reds, who appointed Arne Slot as their new head coach earlier this July, have Mohamed Salah as their primary source of goals. They also have Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, and ex-Juventus man Federico Chiesa as their other offensive options.
Meanwhile, the Anfield team has used Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch as their main midfield trio. They also have Wataru Endo, Curtis Jones, and Harvey Elliott as backup options.
Liverpool attacker backed to shine at club
Speaking recently to Betfred, ex-Liverpool star Glen Johnson hailed Darwin Nunez and backed him to shine in the future. He commented:
“He’s not a goal machine, but he’s a threat every time he plays and he’s a pain in the backside for defenders. I can see him being a success at the club in the long-term.”
Nunez, who made his first start of the season last Saturday, has netted once in five total appearances for the Merseyside outfit this campaign.
Overall, the 25-year-old striker has found the back of the net 34 times and laid out 17 assists in 101 outings across competitions for his club.
