Carrie Underwood has found an unexpected ally in Whoopi Goldberg regarding her decision to perform at Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration. On January 13, it was announced that the 41-year-old country singer had accepted the invitation to perform, leading to backlash from some of her fans and the public.
On The View during the January 14 episode, Whoopi, 69, addressed the situation and expressed her support for Carrie, even though she personally doesn’t align with Trump’s policies. Whoopi emphasized that Carrie, like anyone, has the right to make her own decisions about where she performs.
“People do what they do for whatever reasons,” Whoopi stated. “I stand behind her.”
While co-hosts Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin disagreed with Whoopi’s stance, Whoopi continued to defend Carrie’s right to perform wherever she chooses, adding, “If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform someplace, I believe they have the same right. I have to support.”
Whoopi also clarified that while she won’t be watching the inauguration, she respects Carrie’s decision. Carrie herself later explained why she accepted the invitation to perform at the event, though details about her reasoning have yet to be shared in full.
