D’Wayne Wiggins, a talented musician and member of the legendary Oakland-based band Tony! Toni! Toné!, has passed away. He was only 64.
Wiggins’ family announced his untimely passing on March 7, 2024, revealing he had been battling bladder cancer for the past year.
“With broken hearts, we share with you that our beloved D’Wayne passed away this morning surrounded by family and loved ones,” said the Wiggins family in a statement. “Over the past year, he has been privately and courageously battling bladder cancer. Through this fight, he remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community.”
The singer, guitarist and producer was a founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné! along with his brother Charles Ray Wiggins aka Raphael Saadiq and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley. Tony! Toni! Toné! broke through with their 1990 sophomore album, Revival, which featured the hits “Feels Good,” “Whatever You Want,” and “It Never Rains In Southern California.” More mainstream success arrived two years later with its follow up, Sons Of Soul, which included “Anniversary” and achieved double platinum status.
D’Wayne Wiggins would release his own solo project in 2000 called Eyes Never Lie via Motown Records. Throughout the years, Wiggins continued to tour as the bandleader of Tony! Toni! Toné!
