Margaret Qualley has shared the painful impact that the prosthetics she wore for The Substance had on her skin. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on January 13, the 30-year-old actress explained that the prosthetics caused such severe skin damage that her face was excluded from certain shots during filming. She recalled a specific scene from the opening credits, where the camera angles were deliberately chosen to avoid showing her face due to the extent of the damage.
The acne caused by the prosthetics persisted long after filming, even affecting her next project, Kinds of Kindness, where she played four different characters. Margaret noted that one of her characters in that film was portrayed with the same acne that had resulted from the prosthetics in The Substance. She joked that it worked out perfectly for the character and added that it took her about a year to fully recover from the physical effects.
In a separate interview, Margaret also discussed the types of roles she is interested in taking on next, though she didn’t specify particular projects.
