The ongoing Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, has caused widespread devastation, particularly within the Black community in the area. The fire, driven by 100 mph Santa Ana winds, has scorched over 10,600 acres and claimed 10 lives, leaving many families devastated. Altadena, historically a refuge for Black families during the Great Migration, has a significant African American population, and many of these residents are now facing the heartbreaking loss of homes that have been passed down through generations.
The fire has destroyed homes and businesses in historically Black neighborhoods, erasing parts of the community’s legacy. One social media user, @Cilela, shared the story of her great-grandfather, who was a pioneer in the area, owning Pasadena’s first Black service station. She highlighted the deep roots Black families have in Altadena and how their contributions are now at risk of being erased by the fire.
In response to the devastation, several GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to support those affected. One key campaign is focused on providing urgent help to the Black community in Altadena, with 100% of the funds raised going directly to victims. Another GoFundMe is supporting 83-year-old Walt Butler, a longtime community member who lost his home of over 60 years in the fire. There is also a campaign for Chinyarai Modesti Hamilton’s mother, who lost everything in the fire, with the goal of raising $20,000 to help her rebuild.
In addition to these individual campaigns, organizations such as the California Fire Foundation, Mutual Aid LA, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank are also accepting donations to help provide essential supplies to the affected communities.
Support is crucial as the community begins to rebuild and recover from the immense loss caused by the Eaton Fire.
