Disney+ is breathing new life into Holes with a gender-swapped TV adaptation of Louis Sachar’s iconic 1998 novel. According to Variety, the upcoming series will feature a female protagonist sent to a detention camp, where she and other campers are forced to dig holes under the watchful eye of a harsh Warden. The purpose of their grueling task remains a mystery, just as in the original story.
Liz Phang will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Alina Mankin joining as writer and fellow EP. Drew Goddard, another executive producer, shared his personal connection to the project: his mother, a lifelong schoolteacher, originally recommended Holes to him in the late 1990s, predicting its widespread appeal. Goddard expressed excitement over the adaptation, promising it would capture the essence of Sachar’s work while offering a fresh perspective.
The 2003 film version, starring Shia LaBeouf, Patricia Arquette, Sigourney Weaver, and Jon Voight, remains a favorite among fans, and this new series aims to honor the original while offering something new.
