Luigi Mangione’s mother, Kathleen Mangione, made an unsettling statement when questioned by police just days before her son’s arrest for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, during a call with law enforcement, Kathleen did not deny the possibility of her son being involved in the crime, instead saying it was something she could see him doing. She indicated that Luigi had expressed anger towards the healthcare industry and could potentially go to extreme lengths in carrying out such actions, which suggested she had some awareness of his grievances.
Kathleen’s statement raised further concern, as it appeared she understood the depth of her son’s frustrations, possibly including writings or verbal expressions about the healthcare sector. She had previously reported Luigi missing, and just the day before his arrest, the FBI contacted her to inform her that a suspect in the murder case resembled her son. This led to his eventual capture while eating at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, after being spotted by customers who recognized him from the nationwide manhunt.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested and later charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson.
