Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine is an accomplished actor and award-winning filmmaker, known for his roles in Treme, Bosch, Heroes, The Knick, and The Lincoln Lawyer. However, he’s perhaps most recognized for his portrayal of Ronnie in Lena Waithe’s The Chi. In addition to his acting career, Ntare is also a filmmaker who crafted the powerful documentary Memories of Love Returned. This film is a tribute to Ugandan photographer Kibaate Aloysius Ssalongo, whom Ntare met in 2002 under serendipitous circumstances when his car broke down in Mbirizi, Uganda. Through this encounter, Ntare discovered Kibaate’s extraordinary photography and embarked on a 22-year journey to preserve the photographer’s legacy.
The documentary captures Kibaate’s profound impact on his community and the complex social dynamics surrounding his family, which included multiple wives and children. The film also explores themes of memory, identity, and the role of art in preserving history. Notably, Ntare’s exhibit of Kibaate’s photos, also called Memories of Love Returned, sparked emotional connections with the locals, who recognized themselves and their loved ones in the photographs. The exhibit also led to revelations about family tensions and financial struggles among Kibaate’s relatives, which Ntare addressed in the film.
In addition to its focus on Kibaate’s work, the documentary touches on larger social issues, including gender dynamics, the legacy of colonialism, and the LGBTQ+ experience in Uganda, where anti-gay laws are prevalent. Ntare’s success with the film has earned him accolades, while the timing of its success coincides with his upcoming role in the AppleTV series Firebug, set to premiere in 2025.
Ntare’s dedication to preserving the cultural heritage and memories of his homeland reflects his deep connection to Uganda, a place he’s visited since childhood. Through Memories of Love Returned, he not only honors Kibaate’s artistry but also provides a window into the rich history and complexities of Ugandan life.
