Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has strongly rejected the narrative suggesting that Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, should be viewed as a modern-day vigilante. Speaking at a press conference on Monday following Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania, Shapiro made it clear that Mangione was *”no hero”* and stressed that *”in America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint.”*
Shapiro also praised the McDonald’s employee who had called 911 after spotting Mangione, calling the staffer *”the real hero in this story.”* Mangione has been charged with various offenses, including forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records, and providing false identification to law enforcement.
Despite his arrest, Mangione gained a following on social media, with some individuals expressing their frustrations with the insurance industry, even leading to the creation of a GoFundMe page for his legal defense. However, UnitedHealthcare, the company Thompson led, released a statement expressing relief that Mangione was apprehended, offering support to Thompson’s family and urging respect for their privacy as they mourn the loss.
The case continues to unfold, with law enforcement and UnitedHealthcare working together on the investigation.
