Kelly Marie Tran, known for her role as Rose Tico in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has publicly come out as queer in a new interview with Vanity Fair. The 35-year-old actress shared that this is the first time she has openly discussed her sexuality, stating, “I’m a queer person.”
Tran’s announcement coincides with her involvement in the upcoming remake of Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet, directed by queer filmmaker Andrew Ahn. In the re-imagined film, Tran plays Angela, a woman who, alongside her girlfriend Lee (played by Lily Gladstone), is trying to have a baby through IVF. The story follows Angela and her best friends, including Chris (played by Bowen Yang), as they concoct a plan for a fake wedding to help secure a green card for Min (Han Gi-chan), who is under pressure to return to Korea to take over his family’s business.
Tran described the experience of working on the film as deeply meaningful, sharing that she had never felt so accepted in a queer space before. “I don’t feel like I’m acting at all in this movie,” she said, expressing how the role resonated with her personally.
The film’s story, dealing with themes of family, cultural expectations, and queer identity, reflects Tran’s own journey as she continues to find her place within the LGBTQ+ community.
