Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo took a unique approach in the upcoming Wicked movie adaptation by performing their vocals live during filming, rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. Director Jon M. Chu shared that the decision stemmed from the actresses’ confidence in their vocal abilities, with them expressing that singing live is “what [they] do.” The live performances aimed to enhance the emotional connection between the characters and the music, bringing authenticity to their roles as Glinda and Elphaba.
Singing live on set presented additional challenges. For instance, Cynthia Erivo performed “Defying Gravity” while suspended in a harness, and Ariana Grande incorporated dramatic movements, such as singing while on a chandelier. The production turned into a dynamic recording studio to accommodate their decision, which Chu described as a testament to their artistry and dedication to the project【23】【24】.
