George Strait was honored at the 2024 Country Music Awards with the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, cementing his legacy as the King of Country Music. The ceremony, held at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, featured a star-studded tribute performance from Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, Chris Stapleton, Parker McCollum, and Jamey Johnson, who all paid homage by performing one of George’s iconic hits, “Troubadour.”
The tribute brought the crowd to its feet, giving George a standing ovation when he took the stage to accept the award. During his acceptance speech, he humorously remarked that he was glad he was old enough to have recorded his songs first, as the tribute performances of his music were so impressive.
Jamey Johnson, despite his recent arrest for drug possession and speeding in nearby Williamson County, Tennessee, didn’t let that stop him from joining the tribute. He has written songs for George and Willie Nelson over the years, making this performance especially meaningful.
George joins a prestigious list of past CMA Lifetime Achievement honorees, including Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson. It’s clear that George Strait is now in some very legendary company as the King of Country!
